Three ways to boost site security this winter
Posted on 20th December 2022 at 11:35
Short days, dark afternoons and very cold nights.
Despite winter being a time when we all want to get home, close the door behind us and keep warm it can also be a time when business and commercial premises are at more risk of burglary than ever before.
In 2021/22, according to Statistics site Statistica.com there were over 266 thousand burglaries in the whole of England and Wales, and with the current economic situation, this figure only looks likely to increase. So what can you do? How can you reduce the threat to your site, staff and property?
Luckily, we have outlined a few important things that you can do to help deter potential thieves.
1. Secure the area around your premises.
It may be an obvious point but it is an essential one. If simply anyone can gain access to your premises (whether on foot or in a vehicle) at any time, then this is something that you may need to re-think.
Physical Security Products such as fencing or gates are ideal for keeping intruders and potential ram-raiders away from your premises.
When it comes to getting the right fencing and gates to secure the area, there are usually two options to choose from- sliding or swing gates.
As the name suggests, sliding gates open and close by sliding in and out, which makes them a great option if you are limited for space. Swing gates, on the other hand, do exactly the opposite. They swing open and thus take up more space. However, they are the lower maintenance of the two options. Both types of gates can operate automatically and are a robust and reliable solution that will offer you great security and serve you well in the long term.
2. Check, Service or Upgrade your Industrial Doors.
During the summer is one of the most convenient times to have your Personnel Doors or Industrial Roller Shutters checked, serviced and upgraded. A poorly functioning door grants easy access to burglars. If your door is not working as it should – for example, it’s making a lot of noise, it doesn’t shut properly or it is sticking – it is an invitation for would be thieves and it needs to be fixed.
HSE regulations state that all electrically operated doors should be serviced at least once a year but it is not only electrically operated doors that can develop issues over time. Our service plans at Stanair mean that our qualified engineers can check all of your premises access points and ensure that they are working just as they should
Consider also what your doors are made of. Wooden doors are not very robust and are therefore vulnerable to attack and damage. A more secure choice here would be the replacing of any wooden doors with Steel Security Doors. These doors are long lasting, robust and act as a deterrent to any would be thief or opportunist. You can check out our range of doors here.
3. Maximise your window security.
Never ever forget your windows. After your doors, they are the easiest way to gain access to your site for burglars and intruders.
Consider fitting window security products such as security shutters, window bars or folding and retractable grilles.
With a range of options available to suit any budget, there are many ways in which you can boost your site security in a simple and cost effective way.
Window Security Shutters provide perhaps the best level of security. They are mini Roller Shutters after all. Each steel shutter is not only strong and damage resistant, prevent any un-authorised access to your vulnerable glass panes but can also, in most cases, be powder coated in the colour of your choice. If your premises has a large front window – say perhaps a shop or a hairdresser, then a perforated shutter would be a good choice. Your customers can still see your products, but they are still safe and secure.
If you are not sure which Workplace Security Shutter would best suit, you can explore Stanair’s full range of products here or contact our experts. They would be more than happy to help.
Removable or fixed steel window bars are a great alternative as they make breaking your windows very difficult indeed. They are easy to install and available in a wide range of colours which means you can be both safe and stylish.
Another alternative to the above is making use of trackless gates. They provide an extra layer of security behind your windows. Even if the burglars do manage to break through, the gates will provide an effective barrier to your site.
