Open Steel gate with Stanair car in the distance
‘Tis the season and, as Christmas carols float through the breeze, you could be forgiven for looking forward to the moment when you finally get to secure your business’ doors and head home for the holidays…however so are some criminals.

It is a sad fact that the festive season can see a rise in attack and thefts of business premises that have been left empty for the holiday season – generally as much as 25%. And with the current economic climate, opportunistic thieves could jump at the chance to enter your unattended site.

It is not all bad news though. There are some simple things that you can do now to help protect your site and deter potential thieves from targeting your site this Christmas.

Check out our top five tips:
1. Check your Exterior Industrial doors are damage free, secure and operating properly

Roller Shutters are an effective deterrent against crime – however only when they are operating properly and are damage free. This means that any signs of disrepair such as squeaking or grinding should be investigated immediately by a trained expert as it can betray a weakness as well as more obvious signs of distress such as gaps, dents and corroded slats. These issues can be easily exploited and could leave your site and stock vulnerable.

Luckily, Stanair can offer you peace of mind in the lead up to the festive season through offering you a free consultation to discuss potential areas of weakness and also provide advice on how to make your site and doors more efficient as well as secure.

2. Invest in anti-ram raid posts

If you have a site which is accessible to the public, it is a good idea to invest in these simple deterrents.

Any door can be vulnerable to attack from ram-raiding, no matter how well-maintained. These barriers make it virtually impossible to directly attack your doors with a vehicle as they will stop, slow or severely damage any vehicle which tries.

With a wide variety of posts available including removeable, automatic, flexible or fixed posts, there is one which best suits your budget, purpose and business needs.

Easy, simple and effective, you can learn more about the benefits of Stanair’s range of bollards and access equipment in our special blog here or just ask us for a free site visit to discuss your options.

3. Check your exterior personnel doors

All exterior doors can be potentially vulnerable but this is especially true when they are wooden.

It is certainly worth your while to carefully assess any wooden personnel doors upon your site and check them carefully for signs of damage or weakness.

Wood is more likely to be weakened by the effects of weather and, just simply, age and a damaged door is an open invitation to thieves. At the same time, check your doors carefully for gaps which as well as harming your site’s energy efficiency, leave you susceptible to pest ingress and could act as encouragement to thieves.

Of course, for optimum results, you could invest in steel personnel doors (you can see our full range here) which offer long-term durability, strength as well as excellent security.

4. Maximise your window security

When you do complete a tour of your site, don’t forget to check the status of your windows. After a door, they are the easiest way to gain access to your site for burglars and intruders.

As well as repairing any obvious damage, there are other ways to make your glass doors or windows a deterrent.

One way is to install window security shutters. These aluminum shutters protect your glass against damage and are perhaps the best choice for large windows or glazed doorways thanks to their durability and strength.

Another option is to install removable or fixed steel window bars or trackless gates behind your windows. Even if thieves manage to break the glass, these products can provide an effective barrier to your site.

5. Secure your site from unauthorised access

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to deter a potential thief is to make it difficult for them to come on site at all – whether on foot or in a vehicle.

Physical Security Products such as fencing or gates are ideal for keeping intruders and potential ram raiders away from your premises. Whether sliding or swing gates, both can be easily integrated into any existing fencing and provide excellent access security. With options such as key fob entry points, keypad access or even remote access, the methods to control the access to and thus the security of your site is endless.

Lastly, even if your site remains open this Christmas, it is reassuring to know that, whatever your emergency, Stanair remains on hand 24/7 to get you back to normal operation as quickly as possible whether it is a fault with your access equipment, your industrial doors or even as the result of an accident. Just call us and know that we aim to be on site the very same day so you and your business can return to normal just as soon as possible. Even on Christmas Day itself!

So finally then, all that is left is to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe, secure and prosperous New Year! Happy Holidays!
