Stanair is reminding business owners to ensure they are on top of their legal duties regarding the dangerous material asbestos in their buildings.
A recent survey by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that 60 per cent of business owners have no idea it is their responsibility to get an asbestos survey done.
And if the substance is found, they must put an asbestos management plan in place.
The law says that any person or organisation that has clear responsibility for the maintenance or repair of non-domestic premises through a tenancy agreement or contract is responsible for asbestos.
Stanair’s engineers often have to ask businesses where asbestos is located in a building before they can install or carry out modifications to industrial doors.
Asbestos was widely used as a building material between the 1930s and 1970s because of its insulating and fireproof properties.
It is not dangerous until disturbed. But if damaged the fibres are easily breathed in, and can lead to cancers of the lungs and chest lining.
