Stanair safety focus: Making docking bays safer for staff
The very nature of having a busy warehouse operation carries the risk of injury for the staff who do the work.
The constant movement of goods mixed with heavy vehicles, machinery and new inexperienced staff, is a dangerous combination and hard to manage properly.
Of course no company wants to see an employee injured in any way, which is why health and safety is a priority for so many companies.
One of the places in a warehouse with the greatest risk is the docking bay. Stanair has identified a number of questions that must be answered for each bay:
- Are docking bays correctly designed for the vehicles that are using it? Are there heavy lifting implications if the vehicle is a different height to the bay? A dock leveller can remove height problems
- Are there measures in place to stop staff falling off loading bays? Removable guard railing is a sensible precaution
- Can the driver of the vehicle using the bay see properly? Automated traffic light systems will allow drivers to reverse in safely
- Could bad weather affect loading or unloading and place staff at risk or slips on wet surfaces? A dock shelter can remove the risk of bad weather from your docking bay
